This is an intermediate / advanced class designed for quilters who are comfortable with quilting basic feathers and already use rulers or grids but who want to learn more (or who have done Workshop 1).
Let’s build up your skills on day one with rulers and grids, moving onto advanced feathers on day two. On the third day we’ll create a ruler and feather sample using the skills learnt in days one and two. The final part will be using inktense to colour the sample.
Ruler work is an essential part of a longarm quilter's skillset. We’ll cover quilting with rulers in the first part of this 3-day workshop.
Grid designs have become a standard feature in free motion quilting world wide. The grids session aims to build on the basic grid designs by creating what seems to be more complicated and intricate designs, perfect for use in backgrounds around feature designs or even in borders and sashing as a fill or stand-alone design. Students will learn to break down a complicated design into easy-to-follow repeat patterns over various grid spacings. This technique will assist students to create amazing fill designs using only grid marking with no need to draw out the entire pattern.
In the advanced feathers section we will focus on applying feather designs to typical block types, as well as sashing and borders. Telene will show you how to handle curves and corners, as well as using feathers as an all-over pattern. We will also look at various vein design options.
Creating a feather and ruler work sample will be the final day of this technique-focused workshop.
In the afternoon on the final day you’ll learn how to Inktense your sample using a quilt first then add colour later technique. Telene will show you how to take your one-of-a-kind quilted pieces without any patchwork or applique and transform them. It is great fun seeing your coloured quilt develop.
