Meandering Landscape with Jo Avery

Join Jo for a stimulating and creative workshop exploring a range of techniques for both machine and hand. This is an opportunity to embrace a more playful approach to quilting
and loosen up your style.

We will be exploring freehand curved piecing to create an impressionistic landscape with
layers that can be filled with a range of interesting FMQ designs. To finish we will add texture by stitching felt ‘sand dollars’ to the foreground.

You will learn how to cut and piece a range of freehand curves on your domestic machine before turning to the long arm machines. Jo will be sharing her ‘free and fun’ ethos by demonstrating a range of quilting ideas that you can then develop and use at home. We will look at different ways to move between motifs and how to drift between patterns. Jo will teach some of her trademark designs such as coffee beans, interlocking squares, contours, micro girds and kissing leaves as well as sharing all her tips and tricks.

For that extra finishing touch Jo will show you how to add cute little felt sand dollars after
quilting (and without threads showing on the back!). You will hopefully leave the class with
increased confidence and a new readiness to experiment with your FMQ.

Size: approx. W19” x H30”

Pinhole will provide fabric kits using these gorgeous Marcia Derse Fabrics for your quilt (fabrics may vary but they are from the same fabric range as the illustration. Fabrics are available from The Cotton Patch), wadding, backing fabric and Handi Quilter longarm quilting machines. Jo will provide felt and threads.

Please bring along:

  • Sewing machine with quarter inch foot, foot pedal, spare bobbins, needles and power cable (!)
  • Rotary cutter (28mm if you have one as it makes the curves easier to cut. If not, 45mm is fine), medium cutting mat and long ruler.
  • Small scissors

9:30am to 5pm. Includes lunch, drinks and snacks!

All fabrics requirements included.

You need to bring your own domestic sewing machine, with 1/4" foot, for the piecing. If this is not possible, you will be able to rent one of our demo machines for a small cost of £20.

For Handi Quilter owners only.
